On Dating Brazilian Boys

Oh Brazilians, what a group. They’re so fun and passionate and positive; just by being around them I feel as though I have a sunnier outlook on life. They’re also so flirty. And they’re successful at it! My one Brazilian girlfriend can go into any bar, dance with any guy, and not even say one word and he’s dying for her to take him home or give him her number. Meanwhile, I am standing in the corner making smalltalk with the local homeless dog.

The wonderful thing that I learned from being romantically involved with a Brazilian is that they are devoted, if they like you then they will only have eyes for you. You will know immediately that they are infatuated with you and your confidence levels will skyrocket. One year, I was living in a different country and there was a guy, we’ll name him Juan, and he was a catch. Cute, funny, musically talented, and well dressed. I thought I had hit the jackpot. He was obsessed with me, it was wonderful. Things were so great, until  I realized he was obsessed obsessed with me. So, I got tired and tried to end it. I didn’t even try the friends thing, I did the “I live in a different country” thing, even more viable, right?

Wrong. He was immediately planning to work extra hours to buy a plane ticket to visit me. He then contacted me later saying he had a layover in Atlanta and we should meet up. I cannot tell you how many times I had to tell him I had a boyfriend (this was a lie) and he wouldn’t even bat an eye. Truly, I respect him for his perseverance and determination, this guy was not taking no for an answer.

Finally, after blocking him on everything, I didn’t hear from him for awhile. Until he somehow contacted me on a different messaging app. Oh well, it’s the effort that counts. Every now and then I’ll hear from sweet Juan, but I trust he’ll find his true love someday soon.
